I’m Jay Zamporri, and my journey through the realms of sports medicine and athletic training has profoundly influenced my coaching philosophy and methods. Let me share a bit about my background and how it enhances the coaching experience I offer.
My Journey and Expertise
My passion for sports medicine began early in my life and led me to earn a Master's degree in Kinesiology with a focus on Sports Performance from Point Loma Nazarene University. There, I conducted original biomechanical research, becoming the first student from the program to publish in a peer-reviewed journal and present at an international conference.
With over a decade of experience in athletic training, I've had the privilege of working with a diverse array of athletes and sports teams. At Point Loma Nazarene University, I served as an Adjunct Professor and Athletic Trainer, where I led several projects to improve clinical workflow, scheduling, and the quality of service. I coordinated care for student-athletes with various partners and established crucial policies and procedures for the sports medicine department. All while caring for more than 150 student-athletes from the baseball, volleyball, and tennis teams.
I was also a successful athlete myself. I ran track and played American football in college, and was honored to play for both the junior and senior Italian American football national teams up to 2009. From 2012 to 2016, I raced alpine skiing as a sponsored athlete and after I transitioned to the one sport I'll play for the rest of my life, beach volleyball!
Professional Experience
My professional journey includes pivotal roles such as:
Sports Medicine Team Member at the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP): I provided on-and-off-court medical care, including triage, injury evaluation and treatment, and return-to-play decisions.
Resident Athletic Trainer at Muir Orthopaedic Specialists: I spearheaded the development of the Athletic Training Residency program, improved clinical workflows, and gained valuable experience in surgical assisting and diagnostic imaging.
Athletic Trainer at Stanford University: I offered medical coverage for club sports, summer camps, and multiple teams, managing injury evaluations and treatment plans.
Fellow Athletic Trainer at Saint Mary’s College of California: I handled medical care for the Women’s Lacrosse team, developing and implementing comprehensive rehabilitation protocols.
Publications and Contributions
I have also contributed to the field through research and publications. Notably, I co-authored studies such as:
"Ball Speed Predictors in Slide Attacks in Female Volleyball Players" presented at the 40th International Society of Biomechanics in Sports Conference, Liverpool, UK.
"The Effects of Compression Tights on Dynamic Knee Motion During a Drop Vertical Jump in Female College Athletes" published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine.
Coaching Philosophy
My coaching approach is rooted in my extensive knowledge of biomechanics, injury prevention, and performance optimization. I understand beach volleyball's physical and mental demands and am dedicated to helping athletes achieve their peak performance while minimizing the risk of injury. I focus on personalized coaching plans that cater to the individual needs of each athlete, emphasizing technique refinement, strategic gameplay, and overall physical conditioning.
